After more than a decade, Microsoft is finally ending support for Windows 7 on Tuesday. That means computers running on the platform will no longer receive technical assistance and software updates, including security updates that protect users from cyberattacks.
While more than half of the world’s Windows devices had upgraded to Windows 10 by the end of 2019, Windows 7 is still immensely popular in China. As of the third quarter last year, a whopping 62% of PCs running Windows in the country were still on Windows 7, according to CNCERT, the national computer emergency response body. In contrast, Windows 10 held a tiny 12% share.
Microsoft started notifying Windows 7 users about the impending change in early 2019. It recommends all remaining users to upgrade to Windows 10, which was first released in 2015. Some Chinese users seem reluctant to move with the times, though. One popular Weibo comment said, “Is it just me who thinks Windows 7 is better than Windows 10?”
