Chinese internet users can’t access Netflix in the country. But there might be a silver lining: Filmgoers will still get to see one one of the platform’s best films on the big screen.
The Netflix-produced Oscar-nominated film Marriage Story is heading to Chinese theaters nationwide on February 28, 2020. China’s Road Pictures, a film distributor aspiring to be the A24 of China, announced the release date on Tuesday after securing the theatrical distribution rights in late December.
Road Pictures has previously distributed award-winning foreign films in China, including Lebanese drama Capernaum and Japanese Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters.
In the US, Marriage Story had a limited theatrical release a month before it started streaming on Netflix in December. Most major movie theaters don’t show Netflix films because they don’t agree on the length of the window between release dates for theaters and home streaming.
