If you were excited about 5G, smartphone maker Oppo has news for you. The company’s Vice President Brian Shen announced that Oppo is starting research into 6G technology, local media reported.
However, industry insiders say it’s too early to talk about the technology. Right now, 6G is a vague term that researchers use to mark the novelty of the technology they’re developing, according to Roberto Saracco, Professor at the University of Trento.
The future generation of wireless technology was mentioned during a media briefing in Shanghai on Tuesday. That same day, Oppo launched its newest smartphone, the Oppo Reno 2, priced at RMB 2,999 (US$420) in China.
Curiously, just like the new iPhone 11, the new Oppo handset had a host of high-tech features but not 5G connectivity, even though the company launched a 5G handset four months ago. In May, Oppo’s Reno 5G smartphone became the first commercial 5G smartphone available in Europe.
