It’s been more than four years since System Shock 3 was first announced. But after it lost a publisher last year, the game’s creators now say they’re handing the reins over to Tencent.
“As a smaller Indie studio, it had been challenging for us to carry the project on our own,” tweeted OtherSide Entertainment on Wednesday. “We believe Tencent's deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights.”
System Shock, the original PC classic, came out in 1994. Set in a multilevel space station with a labyrinth of corridors, it was credited for creating a brand new genre of immersive sims. The 1999 System Shock 2 also inspired many horror survival games like the popular 2007 game BioShock.
Tencent has been looking to expand its international reach with a wider variety of games. The company’s recent star hires include veterans from Kojima Productions and Ubisoft, and they led the creation of big-name titles such as Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid and Halo 4. Tencent already owns or has stakes in Ubisoft, Riot Games, Activision Blizzard, Supercell and Epic Games, among other international studios.
